Personal Statement

My experience working as a clinical support worker in hospital settings, including neurorehabilitation and spinal injury care, has given me a strong foundation in risk assessment, triage, and escalation in fast-paced and emotionally demanding environments. Ward work involves managing multiple competing demands simultaneously, including phone calls, visitors requiring support, safety incidents, and urgent clinical requests. I prioritise tasks based on risk and vulnerability rather than urgency of demand, ensuring that those most at risk receive immediate attention.

In situations indicating immediate danger, such as aggressive behaviour or a deteriorating patient, I follow established procedures, involve the appropriate ward lead, and escalate to clinical staff or emergency response teams where necessary. I communicate clearly and concisely, ensuring key information is shared without delay. I maintain situational awareness, ensuring I know who is responsible for each task; provide brief and relevant updates; and continuously re-prioritise as new information emerges. This reflects my ability to remain calm under pressure, make decisions quickly, and respond effectively to dynamic and high-risk situations.

Safeguarding is a core part of my role. I work within local policies and legal frameworks, including the Care Act 2014 and the Mental Capacity Act 2005. I am trained to recognise indicators of vulnerability such as self-neglect, coercive control, cognitive impairment and social isolation. When concerns arise. I take responsibility by recording factual, accurate information and escalating appropriately through safeguarding leads and referral pathways. I communicate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, ensuring information is shared on a need-to-know basis and documented clearly to support continuity of care and accountability.

Accurate documentation and IT proficiency are key strengths. I regularly use electronic patient record systems and incident reporting tools to log contacts, actions, timelines, and decisions in real time. I understand that records are critical for safety, continuity, and potential investigations, so I ensure all information is clear, concise, and evidence-based. My role requires me to listen, speak, and type simultaneously in busy and sometimes noisy environments, which has developed my ability to multi-task effectively while maintaining accuracy. I am confident in adapting to new systems and maintaining attention to detail at all times.

I demonstrate strong communication skills, including active listening and empathy, when supporting patients and families who may be distressed, confused, or in crisis. I adapt my communication style to meet the needs of different individuals, ensuring information is understood and that people feel heard and supported. This includes de-escalating challenging situations and gathering key information sensitively and efficiently.

Resilience, integrity, and professionalism underpin my practice. I am accustomed to working unsocial hours and dealing with emotionally intense situations, and I remain calm, respectful, and focused under pressure. I work effectively as part of a team but am also confident using my initiative within established procedures. I act with honesty and accountability, ensuring I do not make assumptions or exaggerate information, and I escalate concerns promptly when required.

My experience within neurological settings, where patients can present with complex needs, unpredictable behaviours, and communication difficulties, has strengthened my ability to assess risk, gather accurate information, and respond appropriately in real time. I am committed to making fair, consistent, and well-reasoned decisions, with public safety and safeguarding at the centre of my practice. I ensure all actions are clearly documented, justified, and aligned with policy and legal responsibilities.
