  • I added sociology and criminology modules to gather different theoretical perspectives in subjects
  • In second year my degree covered the legal frameworks in social work alongside developing interpersonal skills, which included enhancing communication and presentation skills
  • My additional subjects during this year were from the childhood practice degree programme
  • These were 'children and childhoods' and 'children and the family'
  • These modules provided a strong theoretical understanding of sociological and psychological perspectives of childhood
  • The latter module covered diverse family types, different parenting roles and power between the state and the family
  • In my Honours years, the focus shifted towards practice placements and more in depth analysis of key theories underpinning social work
  • The culmination of this was undertaking a 8000 word dissertation, which I chose to wrote on investigating the barriers to effective communication with children in a social work setting

  • The ethos of the organisation revolved around promoting the independence and rights of each service user
  • Support was only provided where necessary
  • For example, administering medication, providing personal care, preparing meals, as well as supporting service users with weekly shopping and attending any clubs
  • This work also included holidays, for example, a long weekend in Blackpool with three service users
  • This role also included handling the finances of service users and making sure they were correct each shift
  • This job required excellent communication skills to build positive relationships with the service users during residential support
  • This work included shifts with sleepovers within the service user's homes
  • Additionally, I had to work with other staff members who were in surrounding residential accommodation
  • A major part of my role was risk assessing and making sure I maintained the safety of each service user when in their home or out in the community
  • Another key part was maintaining good relationships with the service user's family or carers while they were visiting.
