My name is Zahra Hamid. I am 20 years old. Growing up, I faced significant health challenges due to a lack of appropriate support and medication from the NHS. For years, I suffered from severe night terrors that disrupted my sleep and daily life.
These difficulties affected my school years, limiting my social opportunities, academic achievements, and ability to pursue higher education. I also struggled with depression and anxiety during this critical period.
At 16, I experienced a mental burnout requiring hospitalization, which delayed my studies and led me to reduce my A-level subjects. As a result, I was forced to take a year out of school to focus on my recovery.
After persistent efforts, I obtained medication that greatly improved my sleep. Despite ongoing challenges with fibromyalgia and chronic exhaustion, I remain determined to contribute effectively in a work environment while managing my health.
As a dedicated and resourceful individual, I bring a blend of creativity, technical skills, and compassionate volunteer experience. I excel at problem-solving, effective communication, and adapting to new challenges. My goal is to contribute meaningfully to a team while continuing to grow professionally and personally.
Why I Chose This Role
Having faced significant health challenges in the past, I developed a deep understanding of the isolation and vulnerability that can accompany such experiences. This inspired me to become a Befriending Volunteer with Advocacy Matters, where I could offer empathy, companionship, and practical support to others navigating similar difficulties. My role has allowed me to transform personal adversity into meaningful connection, reinforcing my commitment to inclusive, person-centred care and advocacy.
In addition to befriending, I also have experience designing and creating posters for Advocacy Matters, allowing me to use creative skills I am already familiar with.
