Summary

I'm a hard working Visible and professional Leader. Not just across the Operating Departments but also other departments such as Maternity. Promoting a culture of safety, quality, learning and continuous improvement.

Whilst managing the Maternity Operating Departments, I monitored and managed the Operating lists, ensuring efficiency but also maintaining high standards of care. Making the patients journey and outcomes positive.

Being a Senior member of the team, I set the tone. Leading by example and supporting my teams and other colleagues during times of pressure and change.

During my years working in Operating Theatres and being the point of contact for ward staff, I have gained a great deal of experience managing staff and teams, helping to develop a workforce, maintain staff wellbeing, offering and giving support where needed.

During my time in Maternity, I built up a new team of theatre staff, interviewing candidate's, selecting the appropriate ones for the team. Managing the current team and welcoming the new ones. Working with the staff as individuals, identifying strengths and areas for improvement. I achieved this with monthly meetings with the team, yearly appraisals and one to one meetings where needed.

Managing the theatres also involved overseeing the Operating lists. Regularly checking to make sure the lists are booked maximising theatre utilisation but within patient safety standards. Not allowing over booking and putting the patients at risk. Re booking where emergencies need accommodating and other cases then being rescheduled. Effectively communicating this with all the patients involved.

Regularly attending Multi Disciplinary Team Meetings (MDT's) for the planning of operating lists, complex cases, maximising utilisation and prioritising patient safety.

Priorities can change in health care and managing the change effectively is paramount. Safe planning of patients care and effective communication within the MDT's. These MDT meeting improved the already strong, effective working relationships, with myself as the point of contact for theatre related operational and clinical matters.

Whilst managing the working areas, the staff and the service users, I am constantly thinking about being accountable for clinical governance, risk management, audit and compliance.

We are constantly assessing risk, particularly when managing operating lists, high risks patient and high risk surgery, what planning needs to be done and seeing it through.

I have done a lot of work and audits to improve compliance with daily required safety checks, daily cleaning - is it being done and if so to what standard and is this maintained throughout the day and night.

A marked improvement in cleaning standards was noted during this time and maintained during my time in that area.

I did a big piece of work on theatre utilisation, looking at start times, finish times, what the teams think is being done right and what can be improved.

This work highlighted issues with start times, AM and PM list over runs and inconsistent theatre utilisation. The work was very successful and I improved the start times, finish times, utilisation, management of high risk cases and the turn around.

East & North Hertfordshire Teaching NHS Hospital
Stevenage, Hertfordshire
2025.02 - Current

This is my current employment. I returned here on completion of a 13-month secondment to Maternity as their Theatre and Recovery Team Manager (Band 7), covering Maternity Leave.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • I work as part of a multi-disciplinary team in a busy theatre complex.
  • Planning, monitoring, and assessing peri-operative, intra-operative, and immediate post-operative care as a Senior ODP. Providing a high standard of care.
  • Daily staff management, allocation and delegation, ensuring safe staffing levels, and maximising theatre efficiency. This involves lots of staff motivation, management, being seen within department, and leading.
  • I work with multi-disciplinary teams of doctors, nurses, ODPs, and orderly staff, challenging existing practices while maintaining and enhancing services and standards. For many years, I managed the Anaesthetic Staff's roster via our e-roster system. Ensuring maximum cover within the unit, balancing skill mix and seniority, whilst supporting the staff. Carrying out staff appraisals, managing sickness and absence, managing and dealing with variations in staff performance, and identifying solutions to deliver improvements. Working with the staff to improve compliance in completing daily checks in the anaesthetic rooms. Very good results have been observed.
  • Enhance complaint management.
  • Stock management, rotation, and ordering. I am able to prepare, store, and administer prescribed drugs in accordance with Trust policies.
  • Allocation and monitoring of annual leave.

Team Manager, Maternity Theatres & Recovery

East & North Hertfordshire Teaching NHS Trust
Stevenage , Hertfordshire
2024.01 - 2025.02

This was a secondment for 13 months, during which I was able to further develop the skills I had already gained through being a Band 6 in Main Theatres.

Role and duties included:

  • Managing the Maternity Theatre (two theatres) and Recovery team.
  • Appraisal management
  • Theatre list management, overseeing what cases are booked on the theatre lists, ensuring safe staffing for those lists, ensuring equipment needed is present or ordered in advance, multidisciplinary team meetings for high-risk cases, planning the patients' needs and wishes, and overseeing the overall running of the theatres and recovery.
  • Delegating work where applicable, organising, and prioritising workloads.
  • Stock ordering and rotation, working alongside procurement.
  • Monitoring compliance: daily checks, trolley checks, and maintaining this at a high level each month.
  • Completion of monthly audits, interpreting, and collating data. Other audits I undertook were for theatre efficiency and the completion of WHO forms in maternity theatres.
  • Taking part in the "Manager of the Day" (MOD) for the maternity unit, the aim of the MOD in the maternity unit is to work alongside the Maternity Matron and the Band 7 Labour Ward Coordinator to ensure that the maternity service is continually and consistently operationally safe, effective, and well led, acting as a role model and demonstrating a high level of professionalism, effective communication, and organisational skills at all times. Ensuring that flow across the services is maintained, having an overview of all staff working within the maternity service, identifying, mitigating, and/or escalating any midwifery red flags, redeploying resources to meet service needs, supporting effective communication with women where there are concerns and/or delays in care, proactively supporting staff members to maintain well-being by ensuring breaks are allocated and taken, monitoring sickness, and return to work processes.

This is from qualifying as an ODP until I obtained a Band 6 post in 2016. Brief description of your duties and responsibilities:

Outside of the theatre complex, my clinical skills take me to work in Maternity, covering elective and emergency cases, X-Ray, MRI, CT, A&E, and attending cardiac arrests as part of the resuscitation team.
