I'm a hard working Visible and professional Leader. Not just across the Operating Departments but also other departments such as Maternity. Promoting a culture of safety, quality, learning and continuous improvement.
Whilst managing the Maternity Operating Departments, I monitored and managed the Operating lists, ensuring efficiency but also maintaining high standards of care. Making the patients journey and outcomes positive.
Being a Senior member of the team, I set the tone. Leading by example and supporting my teams and other colleagues during times of pressure and change.
During my years working in Operating Theatres and being the point of contact for ward staff, I have gained a great deal of experience managing staff and teams, helping to develop a workforce, maintain staff wellbeing, offering and giving support where needed.
During my time in Maternity, I built up a new team of theatre staff, interviewing candidate's, selecting the appropriate ones for the team. Managing the current team and welcoming the new ones. Working with the staff as individuals, identifying strengths and areas for improvement. I achieved this with monthly meetings with the team, yearly appraisals and one to one meetings where needed.
Managing the theatres also involved overseeing the Operating lists. Regularly checking to make sure the lists are booked maximising theatre utilisation but within patient safety standards. Not allowing over booking and putting the patients at risk. Re booking where emergencies need accommodating and other cases then being rescheduled. Effectively communicating this with all the patients involved.
Regularly attending Multi Disciplinary Team Meetings (MDT's) for the planning of operating lists, complex cases, maximising utilisation and prioritising patient safety.
Priorities can change in health care and managing the change effectively is paramount. Safe planning of patients care and effective communication within the MDT's. These MDT meeting improved the already strong, effective working relationships, with myself as the point of contact for theatre related operational and clinical matters.
Whilst managing the working areas, the staff and the service users, I am constantly thinking about being accountable for clinical governance, risk management, audit and compliance.
We are constantly assessing risk, particularly when managing operating lists, high risks patient and high risk surgery, what planning needs to be done and seeing it through.
I have done a lot of work and audits to improve compliance with daily required safety checks, daily cleaning - is it being done and if so to what standard and is this maintained throughout the day and night.
A marked improvement in cleaning standards was noted during this time and maintained during my time in that area.
I did a big piece of work on theatre utilisation, looking at start times, finish times, what the teams think is being done right and what can be improved.
This work highlighted issues with start times, AM and PM list over runs and inconsistent theatre utilisation. The work was very successful and I improved the start times, finish times, utilisation, management of high risk cases and the turn around.
This is my current employment. I returned here on completion of a 13-month secondment to Maternity as their Theatre and Recovery Team Manager (Band 7), covering Maternity Leave.
