Summary

Professional Summary :

While studying for my Degree in Fine Art I specialised in sculpture. Steiner and the anthroposophical movement was a huge influence on my work as a student - many of my sculptures were inspired by the shapes and forms of Eurythmy and the work of Joseph Beuys and his theory of social sculpture.

I have always been passionate about working with people of all abilities to help and encourage them to fulfil their creative potential. I worked with schools providing Claymation and photography workshops for children from disadvantaged backgrounds which was an experience that exposed to me the power that creativity can have on young people when you give them the tools to express themselves. Over the past 20 years I have trained and worked in a variety of different jobs, all with a common thread of working creatively and supportively with young people and adults. Having completed the 1st year of the MA in Art Therapy at Glasgow University I worked as an Art Therapists assistant for adults with Mental Health assisting to deliver a service in a creative studio environment to facilitate rehabilitation which developed my understanding of empowerment, self-advocacy and education through creativity. As a Community Arts Worker I ran the art department set within a resource centre and offered weekly art classes to service users, this experience created a platform for me to develop my teacher confidence and witness the value of creating a safe, organised creative space. While working as a Teaching Assistant I became familiar with what working in a school requires in terms of commitment, enthusiasm, knowledge, skills, values, the importance of teamwork and building a sense of community. I am an experienced artist and have delivered a variety of workshops and classes in both classroom and community environments all of which have enriched my teaching ability and suitability to this career. I feel it is crucial to continue my own art practice and professional development in order to maintain passion for the subject and to imbue that sense of enthusiasm in my teaching of it. I enjoy challenging myself and to continually question and reflect on my teaching approaches so that I am constantly improving and ensuring I meet the needs of my learners. I have established positive working relationships within the department and value all the incredible support and constructive feedback I have received so far. My interpersonal qualities, approachable demeanour, organisational skills and resourcefulness are skills I use in the classroom on a daily basis. The organisation of well resourced, well differentiated, engaging lessons that focus on the experiences and outcomes within CfE are central to my approach within learning and teaching. I strive to embed collaborative learning strategies as much as possible and facilitate pupil autonomy through a focus on pupil led learning. To contribute to the wider school ethos of providing engaging experiences I run a weekly clubs. It has allowed me to meet more pupils and create a space where they can further investigate and develop their creative skills. I play an active role in DYW through fostering career pathways and developing opportunities for workshops and experiences that I hope expand students belief in what life can offer. I have experience in working across departments delivering S3 fashion, developing IDL resources, teaching stage production in the drama department and creating curricular resources with RMPS in partnership with EIS on anti racist education. As an art teacher in a right respecting school I value pupil voice and try to create opportunities for them to express their thoughts, ideas and opinions. Encouraging pupils to advocate for change that positively impacts themselves and the school is an area I would like to develop further in my own professional practice. I actively engage with Lasswades restorative approach to behaviour management and have formed positive learner relationships' with all my students.
