  • During this position, I worked as part of the acute medical team with clients diagnosed with neurological, progressive conditions including Multiple sclerosis, motor neuron disease, Parkinson's disease, dementia, stroke & respiratory diseases, assessing and offering support regarding both communication and swallowing. Within the same department, I also gained experience on the neurosurgery and major trauma ward.
  • I am efficient in administering bedside swallow assessments, trialling a variety of food and liquids using the IDSSI framework, observing signs and symptoms of aspiration, indicating dysphagia. As well as this, I am confident to implement interventions referring to providing appropriate dietary recommendations on safe IDDSI levels for clients based on assessment findings.
  • I have experience working with adults diagnosed with speech, language and communication difficulties including aphasia, dyspraxia and dysarthria. I am confident administering assessment tools such as the Comprehensive Aphasia Test, PALPA 54, Boston Naming Test and the Weston Aphasia Battery.
  • I am competent in delivering aphasia interventions including Semantic Feature Analysis, Phonological Component Analysis and Verb Strengthening Network Therapy. For adults with motor speech disorders (dyspraxia and dysarthria), I can confidently demonstrate interventions including over-articulation, breathing exercises and slowed, simplified speech.

  • Within my role as a student in this service, I worked with both children, their families and educational settings to assess, support and manage speech, language and communication needs.
  • Examples of the client groups included within this population consisted of: Developmental Language Disorder, speech sound disorders (including Childhood Apraxia of Speech), articulation disorders, stammering, selective mutism, autism and cerebral palsy to name a few.
  • This consisted of working in a variety of settings including mainstream schools, early years settings, special schools and community clinics.
