Work history

GI Physiologist

Nottingham University Hospital NHS Trust
Nottingham , Nottinghamshire
2022.10 - 2026.03

As a GI clinical physiologist I am competent in performing diagnostic investigations such as high-resolution oesophageal manometry with impedance and 24-hour pH impedance monitoring along with independently analysing results and producing detailed clinical reports for a range of consultant gastroenterologists and upper GI surgeons.

In addition to this, I have developed the service from the ground up following the retirement of the previous clinical physiologist. As a result, I have designed resources such as patient information booklets, patient letters, pH monitoring diaries etc. Created documents such as standard operating procedures, equipment logs, risk assessments etc. Written business cases to acquire new equipment for the trust such as new pH monitoring devices to enhance data collection and ensure better results for our patients. During this time, I have frequently liaised with medical engineering and the manufacturer Medtronic to ensure all equipment is routinely serviced and calibrated allowing optimum function and has been PAT tested to fully comply with health and safety regulations and trust policies.

Furthermore, I oversee day to day running of the GI physiology unit liaising with our patient coordinator as well as monitoring resources and completing orders for the department when needed. I am competent in triaging referrals and have improved patient flow and reduced the upper GI physiology waiting list from 150+ to 20 during my time in Nottingham. I frequently attend multidisciplinary team meetings and actively contribute to patient management decisions collaborating with a range of surgeons, specialist nurses, dieticians and gastroenterologists. I have also executed data collection from multiple departments such as medical engineering, colorectal services and surgical services for annual audits on behalf of NHS England.

I have contributed to the teaching of GI physiology for the third year medical students and have been an examiner specifically for history taking during the OSCE examinations. I actively contribute to research activity and have recently collaborated with Nottingham Trent University on a project exploring the effects of physical activity on IBS via changes to the gut microbiome. I am also a member of the midlands, NEYGI working groups and AGIP to stay updated with the latest developments in GI physiology. When opportunities arise, I am also passionate about attending conferences, networking with fellow colleagues and attending training days to contribute towards my professional development.
