Work history

Police Constable / Sergeant

Devon and Cornwall Police
Barnstaple, Devon
06.2002 - 01.2026

Transferred to Devon and Cornwall Police in 2002 and have worked multiple roles over my 23 years with this organisation.

My initial role and training as response constable allowed me to immediately join response team in Torbay and then North Devon. I dealt with infinitely diverse reports via 999 system. Dynamic decision making, conflict management, risk assessment and management skills remained key to my long and successful fulfilment of this vital frontline role.

In North Devon I then worked as licensing constable within two local authority areas. I engaged with local licensed premises community and was key decision maker and case presenter to local court licensing bench. This role that requires specialist knowledge of law around sale and supply of intoxicating liquor and other regulated substances and items. I did this during time of transition to new licensing provisions in 2003 and in doing so further demonstrated my flexibility and perspicacity.

As neighbourhood beat manager constable in 2008 I was recognised as best and highest performing community beat manager for Devon County. My outstanding work in reducing crime and ASB saw 57% drop in my beat area. I managed my own team and oversaw successful implementation of community support officers to this force area.

That same year I was qualified to rank of sergeant, having passed national Police promotion exam parts one and two.

In 2010 I was selected to work as Police representative within Devon Youth Justice Service. I was sole point of contact between Police and wider partnerships for 13 years, and unprecedented length of service in role

  • I managed cases around children who cause harm,
  • Became restorative justice practitioner aligned to Restorative Justice Council
  • Managed victim care portfolio for North West and Torridge
  • Issued and oversaw all out of court resolutions for same geography.
  • Seamlessly transitioned into new legislative regime (Legal Aid Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders 2012) and led my organisation into this.
  • I did so with 3 key system IT changes over the last 18 years.

In 2023 I was made manager of North and West Devon Child Centred Policing Team.

I supervised, at retirement, 10 constables, and that includes those who are child centred policing specialists within Devon Basic Command Unit, covering all of New Devon.

Alongside this I manage local Community Safety Partnership Forth North Devon and Torridge.

  • In doing so I am co located within local authorities for both areas, and I am comfortable and adept at working with our partners away from police stations.
  • I supervise case investigations involving young people,
  • Manage Youth Justice Police workers
  • Core member of Devon Joint Decision Panel for Youth Crime,
  • Chair of Devon Hate Crime and Diversity Group for Safer Devon Partnership Manage Youth engagement Constable, Anti Social Behaviour Constable for my local policing area and missing person team for New Devon area.

I am conscientious, effective, hard working, flexible and resourceful.

I am cognisant of and fully respect rules and processes.

I am resilient and quick to learn, and have demonstrated this throughout my working life, with my 'can do' work ethic

I maintain my positive attitude in face of frequent and varied adversity.
