My early work life consisted of various roles in hospitality working in restaurants and bars. I began as a teenager working in the kitchen of a restaurant and over the years undertook other positions such as server, front of house staff, bartender and Team Leader. This gave me a good background into high standards of customer service, communication skills and working part of a team.
My more recent jobs have moved toward law enforcement and Custody Detention Officer for West Mercia Police.
I was a Special Constable for West Mercia Police from 2021 to 2022, where I obtained skills in Communication, Officer Safety, First Aid, computers and administration, and I worked as an individual and as part of a team. I learnt how to deal with vulnerable people and also aggressive and violent individuals.
My current role as Custody Detention Officer for West Mercia Police means that I have enhanced what I learnt as a Special Constable, and regularly deal with vulnerable people through mental and physical disabilities. I liaise with outside agencies such as local authorities, social services, medical professionals such as GP's and interpreters for non English speaking people. I carry out custody procedures and checks of detained persons and property for welfare and security. I often have to use my interpersonal skills and communication skills to diffuse aggressive and threatening persons brought into the custody. I sometimes have to look after individuals for several days and try to build a good rapport to facilitate an easier stay in custody.
