I have been a Fellow of the IBMS for 17 years and have 24 years experience working within diagnostic Cellular Pathology laboratories. My HCPC registration number is BS43556.
I enjoy all aspects of Histology bench work. I enjoy laboratory management, in particular strategic management and service improvement. Quality Management has been my long term interest and I believe its delivery to be as fundamentally important as operational delivery. I aim to enhance operational delivery and maintain equipment within the remit of UKAS standards to ensure optimal workflow and best attempt to maintain delivery of TATs. Service transformation is an area of interest, I have experience of cross-site working, service delivery and relocation of services.
My Quality interest has allowed me to venture away from Histology. I enjoyed the personal development of Pathology Quality manager role. Over seeing the delivery of Quality in areas where the technical work is unbeknown to myself, it required adaptability, allowing me to expand my communication skills. Relationship Building was paramount and allowed me to utilise the strengths within the team to deliver the QMS tasks for Blood Sciences.
I am continually interested with 15189:2022 compliance and all decisions have this in mind. Risk management and error management are a rewarding task utilised to induce positive change.
Optimisation of upstream processes and workflow to enhance the incorporation of digital pathology, and the opportunities digitisation brings, for example out sauced reporting are of interest.
I have been trained by UKNEQAS to assess Tissue Diagnostics and Specialist techniques EQA submissions, this insight I use to ensure departmental performance is good.
A career highlight has been the development of a commercial tissue softening reagent, publication details as follows: Orchard GE, Torres J, Sounthararajah P. Use of softening agents to improve the production of formalin fixed, paraffin-embedded sections of nail tissue: an assessment. Br. J. Biomed. Sci. 2008; 65: 68-70. Orchard GE, Torres J, Poirier A, et al. Investigation into a new softening agent for use on formalin-fixed paraffin wax embedded tissue. Br. J. Biomed. Sci. 2009; 66(2): 63-66.

This role was a job share on a part time basis. Over see operation of the QMS for Blood Sciences and assist where needed with Cellular Pathology. Ensure UKAS and MHRA standards were adhered too. Prepare paper work for UKAS for extension to scope and prior to inspection. Organise and ensure NC's are responded to as directed by UKAS following inspection.
