Specimen Processing: Receive, log, and prepare patient tissue samples for diagnostic testing. Assisting pathologists with cut up. Bisecting femoral heads with band saw to allow adequate fixation then decal before pathologist dissection. Assessing the decalcification of specimens using x-ray equipment.
Embedding & Sectioning: Embed tissues in wax blocks and use a microtome to cut sections for slide preparation. From large resection blocks to very small biopsies.
Staining Procedures: Perform routine and special staining techniques to aid in microscopic diagnosis.
Laboratory Maintenance: Clean, calibrate, and maintain histology equipment in line with NHS safety and quality standards.
Quality Assurance: Follow NHS protocols for quality control, ensuring accurate and consistent laboratory results using validated control material and methods.
Record Keeping: Enter patient and specimen data into NHS laboratory information systems with high attention to detail.
Health & Safety Compliance: Work within COSHH and infection control guidelines to ensure a safe laboratory environment.
