Referral and Assessment Team, Achieving for Children, Richmond
Richmond
01.2024 - 06.2024
As a student social worker in the Referral and Assessment team I have been given a range of learning opportunities and tasks. I have supported other social workers in strategy meetings and home visits by recording the notes and taking the minutes. I have also been tasked with writing a section 17 assessment for 6 families. This involved contacting the families by introducing myself and arranging a time to visit the home. Conducting safety plans and Family network meetings. I did this within the Achieving for Children and statutory timeframes within the Children Act (1989). As part of the section 17 assessment, I completed direct work with the children. This helped me to include their thoughts and feelings into the assessment.
Skills demonstrated:
Updating case notes
Updating the chronology
Arranging and leading Initial Visits
Sending closure letters
Attending and contributing to case supervision
Completing section 17 assessments

During the 70-day placement within the Child in Need team, I gained insight into the role of a social worker working with children and families. I was responsible for supporting five families on a child in need plan. This involved completing a Genogram with the Families to gain insight into their lived experience and support network. I have also completed direct work with the Children I was supporting, using the signs and safety model. This helped to gain their wishes and feelings.
