Having finished my Level Two Health and Social Care course in 2024, I went into a full-time job as a dementia care worker. While I enjoy the work, I have found it increasingly difficult being faced by people I have come to care about suffering and sometimes passing away. This has been compounded by one of my Grandmother’s having recently developed dementia herself. Seeing her progressively getting worse has made me realise that I would benefit from moving into a job where I can still fully use my caring and compassionate attributes but in a context with a more positive environment. I have always enjoyed interacting with and looking after young children as well as the elderly. Indeed, I nearly opted to do my College course in Child Care rather than in Health and Social Care. I previously helped with the children’s Sunday School class at my parents’ church, and I currently have been helping look after my boyfriend’s two and four year old sisters on a regular basis. These experiences have led me to want to find a position in childcare, as I feel it will enable me to use and develop my skill set. I previously had a part-time job at McDonald’s, where I worked one or two sessions a week for nearly two years. I really enjoyed what was my first paid role, particularly interacting with the customers and ensuring that their expectations were met. I took up my position as a dementia care worker in March 2025 but I feel that the time has now come for me to find a job that aligns better with my longer term career goals. I passed my Level One and Level Two NVQs in Health and Social Care. Originally, I was interested in working with dementia patients for my career, having thoroughly enjoyed placements I had at both Darland House Dementia Care Home in Rainham and with the Medway Community Healthcare Integrated Discharge Team based at Medway Maritime Hospital. However, I have come to realise that I prefer working with children, and that childcare would suit me far better as a career. I am a “people person”, and get on well in new encounters, whatever age the individual happens to be. I was a member of The Girls’ Association at Gillingham Baptist Church for ten years and have helped with the church’s Sunday School and serving at numerous church lunch events for up to 100 people. These commitments enabled me to develop my sense of dedication and how I value loyalty to specific colleagues, places and organisations. I was adopted as a young child and was previously part of Kent County Council’s “Adoptables” group, helping to shape adoption policy and practice in Kent.
