  • I joined as a fitter delivering a contract with Dumfries and Galloway Housing Partnership, subcontracted through British Gas, installing full and complete heating systems which had to be completed in one working day, this was at times extremely challenging to say the least.
  • After only 4 months in the role as a fitter I was made up to the role of team leader.
  • In my role as team leader, I was responsible for every ones safety on site, this was normally limited to the two other plumbers that were part of the team I managed however occasionally included joiners, builders, electricians and the occupants if the properties decided they wanted to stay at home while the work was being carried out and I would then be responsible for ensuring that they were fully aware of what risks there were to them and what safety measures we had put in place to protect them and that they were required comply with or they would have to leave.
  • At the end of each day I completed a walk round of the site and sign off the job ensuring the work had been completed to a safe and high standard.
  • Another responsibility that came along with being a team leader was providing a first point of contact and response to any out of hours customer emergencies on behalf of the company, this helped me gain experience dealing with members of the public and helping to communicate how issues would be resolved.
  • Implemented and documented standard operating procedures to comply with audit and safety requirements.
  • Arranged access to properties and booked appointments with customers.
  • Kept secure and correctly operated plant and equipment supplied, from vehicles to flue gas analysis and mobile data equipment.
