I am a registered Nurse from Nov 2021 and my first post was on a surgical ward in Craigavon Area Hospital. I left my full time job in Aug 2023 and I am with the Nurse bank within the southern trust working in a variety of different wards such as surgical, medical, Urology, ENT and surgical ambulatory clinic. I also recently joined an agency within different trusts. I have cared for a variety of patients and variety of age groups. I enjoy working on a surgical ward and caring for patients pre and post op care. I ensure they receive patient centred care, their pain is managed well as I have seen patients come back from theatre with a patient controlled analgesia(PCA) and a erector spinal plane (ESP).As a result of working with surgical patients I have gained knowledge and skills in their post and pre op recovery. Depending on their recovery and use of drugs I work alongside other team members like doctors and the pain team nurse as they will get involved in the removal of these medications and explain to the patient they will need to be changed to oral medication to help with their recovery. Dieticians and physios also are involved with the care of patients post op to get them back on their feet and encourage them what foods/drinks to eat and avoid. I have cared for patients that have had been on TPN, NG and PEG feed also. TPN can be common for patients who have underwent bowel surgery and it is important to get dieticians involved in their progress and provide them with dietary leaflets to encourage with the appropriate diet and fluids to have/avoid. During my experience I have showed a lot of care, compassion and empathy towards patients to help them with their hospital journey. I have other skills within working on a surgical ward for eg catheter care, wound care, CVC, medicine management and escalating if concerned about a patient. Many surgical patients may not go under surgery and can be treated with IV antibiotics and awaiting scans and procedures.
