Summary

I am a registered Nurse from Nov 2021 and my first post was on a surgical ward in Craigavon Area Hospital. I left my full time job in Aug 2023 and I am with the Nurse bank within the southern trust working in a variety of different wards such as surgical, medical, Urology, ENT and surgical ambulatory clinic. I also recently joined an agency within different trusts. I have cared for a variety of patients and variety of age groups. I enjoy working on a surgical ward and caring for patients pre and post op care. I ensure they receive patient centred care, their pain is managed well as I have seen patients come back from theatre with a patient controlled analgesia(PCA) and a erector spinal plane (ESP).As a result of working with surgical patients I have gained knowledge and skills in their post and pre op recovery. Depending on their recovery and use of drugs I work alongside other team members like doctors and the pain team nurse as they will get involved in the removal of these medications and explain to the patient they will need to be changed to oral medication to help with their recovery. Dieticians and physios also are involved with the care of patients post op to get them back on their feet and encourage them what foods/drinks to eat and avoid. I have cared for patients that have had been on TPN, NG and PEG feed also. TPN can be common for patients who have underwent bowel surgery and it is important to get dieticians involved in their progress and provide them with dietary leaflets to encourage with the appropriate diet and fluids to have/avoid. During my experience I have showed a lot of care, compassion and empathy towards patients to help them with their hospital journey. I have other skills within working on a surgical ward for eg catheter care, wound care, CVC, medicine management and escalating if concerned about a patient. Many surgical patients may not go under surgery and can be treated with IV antibiotics and awaiting scans and procedures.

Work History

Nurse

Southern Health and Social Care Trust
Craigavon, Armagh
11.2021 - Current
  • I work well alongside team members to carry out person centred care and promoting safe practice.
  • Caring for patients and watching their progress in hospital especially pre and post operative care as patients can be very worried about surgery and need some reassurance and comfort prior this.
  • I try to speak with families and update them as much as I can with the patients consent, as I have seen families very worried and concerned about their loved ones and their progress of care in hospital.
  • I have monitored clinical observations and escalated them to more senior members of staff when required to carry out safe practice and ensure the patient is getting the best treatment.
  • I carry out personal care, administration of medications either oral, Intravenous, through a CVC or syringe drivers.
  • I do dressings, admissions, discharges and work under pressure but carry out safe practice as a professional Nurse to ensure the patients are getting patient centred care.
  • I have been able to have my own students and enjoy working alongside them as I know how overwhelming and scary a student Nurse can be. I want them to feel comfortable caring for patients and learn knew skills and experiences to help them enjoy their placements.
  • I encourage students to get involved when doing patient handover as it is good experience as Nurses need to do it on every shift and have good listening and communication skills.
  • I know the importance of documentation and patient confidentiality within the ward. I have completed many practical and online training to help with my knowledge and confidence within the workplace.
  • I also enjoy working in the surgical clinic as this is very good teamwork because it is a nurse and doctor working together when providing care for the patient. Most of the patients are able to go home after although some may stay as an inpatient in hospital. My role in this includes dressings, bloods, observations, admitting patients and handover to wards if they are an inpatient.
  • Overall as my role I have gained confidence, skills, knowledge and teamwork skills by working on different wards and meeting new people.
