I hate to be idle, so when the family I am living with and the street welcomed me in as an asylum-seeker, I volunteered to help out with 'odd jobs'. Mostly this has consisted of painting, decorating and mending.

During the period when, as an asylum-seeker, I was not allowed to work, I offered my performances for free.

I am a classical guitarist who plays to a very high standard, and I have performed in a number of venues.

I supported a group of adults with learning and other disabilities at their weekly drama sessions. This theatre company produces drama exploring issues around disability, and volunteers like me supported and encouraged communication and self-expression through drama.

• Volunteered regularly at Winthrop Community Gardens in Wickersley near to my hotel in Bramley
• Improved herbaceous borders through weeding, seasonal pruning and cutting back.
• Disposed of litter and organic waste following proper procedure.

• Used wide range of hand tools, horticultural machinery and powered hand tools.
• Mowed, trimmed and fertilised green spaces.
• Performed routine grass cutting and general maintenance of green spaces and communal areas.

• I have also volunteered in private gardens in the street where I am now living, because I like to work and be useful but as an asylum-seeker I could only do this in a voluntary capacity

• Operated power and hand tools in a safe and effective manner.
• Applied primer, paints, varnishes and lacquers to walls and surfaces using traditional and sprayer methods.
• Cleaned and properly stored all equipment and supplies at end of each workday and removed trash and debris from work areas.
• Performed flat glass repairs and minor structural repairs to concrete and wood decks, window trim, windows and door casings.
• Prepared trim, walls and ceilings for painting by cleaning, smoothing and priming surfaces.
• Taped around windows and fixtures prior to painting walls.
• Levelled surfaces by filling holes and cracks.
• Applied putty, wood filler, spackling and caulks to prep uneven surfaces and fill in holes.
