I am highly passionate on railway signalling and control systems. I am actively working towards a Chartered Engineer, CEng status through IET by gathering experiences from my placements. To be able to witness ETCS being brought to fruition to the whole UK mainline would be incredible as a public commuter but I would like to be there when the challenge comes as a signalling engineer.
I undertook short placements with maintenance, project and asset management engineering teams in Signalling (S&T) and Electrification (E&P) departments in Network Rail.
I was involved in the commissioning of the Wigan-Southport level crossing upgrade project from AHB to MCB-OD. I shadowed the signalling DPE (Designated Project Engineer) during testing and installation activities for the new Level Crossing systems at Pool Hey, Wyke Cop and Chapel Lane.
I worked on night shifts supporting the team with installation and testing 'like for like' renewals of signalling assets such as LED signals, MARI/SARI, TPWS, HW2000 point machine, Track Circuits and signalling cables.
I worked closely with the STME and Technical Team carrying out day-to-day maintenance and assisting with signalling faults. I undertook annual level crossing tests, conducted Special Inspection Notice 216 on Frauscher Axle Counters and used AIVR to help with planning renewals of signalling assets. I took my own initiative to manage the area's Earth Register and update to a new centralised file as supervised by the STME. I uploaded the delivery unit's 10027 staff surveillances to a North West Power BI platform which has helped the Section Manager's work to be more efficient.
I am currently working with a signalling Project Engineer supporting the signalling assurance side of the TRU alliance between Manchester and Leeds. I familiarised myself with the relevant signalling scheme plans and signalling design specifications in the project area. I took part in Interdisciplinary Checks(IDC), Hazard Identification Workshops(HAZID) and Signal Overrun Risk Assessments(SORAT) as part of the Project Engineer learning experience. I wrote Meeting Minutes for a line speed profile change in W4 and my minutes were used as a reference for a Change Request that involved Journey Time Improvements JTI. I was actively reporting my findings to the signalling PE and DPE in W4 and W3. I upskilled myself with Automatic Power Changeover(APCO), which was newly introduced in TRU and learnt how to use Project Wise, a software to store and review design packages by the Alliance.
