As National Retention Lead I am responsible for leading a coordinated, all‑Wales approach to workforce retention, ensuring that evidence‑based interventions are developed, implemented, and scaled consistently across the system. Core roles and responsibilities in this post include:

  • Provision of senior national leadership for the National Retention Programme and retention improvement and innovation, setting strategic direction and assuring delivery of a coordinated, system‑wide approach to workforce retention across NHS Wales.
  • Leads and influences the design, implementation, and scale of evidence-based retention strategies, translating national workforce priorities into measurable improvement through partnership with the Welsh Government, Trade Unions, Senior Leaders across NHS Wales, Local Retention Leads and the wider NHS Wales workforce.
  • Delivery of the All Wales Nurse Retention Plan
  • Provision of strategic oversight of retention improvement across Wales
  • Working collectively and in partnership with Retention leads and organsiations across NHS Wales to improve and spread and scale improvement through the development and delivery of data driven improvement approaches.
  • Establishment, leadership and sustainment of a high‑impact National Community of Practice to drive consistency, shared learning, and collective accountability for retention outcomes.

Accomplishments

I consider one of my greatest accomplishments to be my successful leadership of the National Retention Programme and the positive impact I have been able to make upon the nursing and wider workforce. I’ve led national workforce retention work across NHS Wales, designing and delivering practical, evidence‑based initiatives that have improved staff experience, strengthen leadership capability and support long‑term workforce sustainability. I’m proud of translating complex workforce challenges into frameworks, programmes and tools that are used across organisations, working closely with Boards, senior leaders, clinicians, policy colleagues and trade unions to make real progress.

My leadership has been recognised through an award nomination for my work in retention and for my leadership as a Head of Nursing. Later in my career, I chose to undertake Master’s‑level study, applying this learning directly to my leadership practice and national role. Above all, I’m proud to be part of the nursing profession a childhood dream that has become a career defined by service, leadership and impact and to have sustained senior leadership roles alongside being a single parent to two amazing childhood who have now embarked upon their own NHS career journeys shows my resilience, determination, commitment and consistency to achieve any goal I set.
