During school I attended work experience, I did this with a gardening service as I thought this would be a good opportunity to learn how to deal with an intense working week.

Within the week I dealt with things like customer service, manual handling and use of power tools.

I enjoyed and valued this week very much as it showed that I wanted to have a career where I would be in a practical environment and develop hands on skills.

Within this role I polish various different types of silverware, stainless, nickel, brass and copper cutlery and hollowware.

As I have been here for over 3 years now I have taken on extra responsibilities such as keeping the work area clean and making sure it’s a safe environment for myself and co workers. As well as this I make sure that any defects such as poor patterns on silverware are removed from the final count. I also make sure that machines are switched off at the end of shift and the workshop area is ready for the next working day.

At the end of last year we had a very large deadline to meet as a team, in order to achieve this goal myself and others volunteered to stay late after work as well as work a Saturday shift in order to meet the deadline. Finally I have been given the job of locking site up at the end of the day showing I am trusted with the important end of day tasks.

In my current role at Envirocleanse, a Yorkshire Water subcontractor, this includes general site maintenance like carrying out cleaning of chemical spillage or replenishing water filters. We also use industrial cleaning equipment, such as high pressure jet washers, to clean tanks that hold anything from fresh water to sulphuric acid. Due to the nature of these tasks I adhere strictly to health and safety procedure and wear correct PPE.
