Work history

Clearing Helpline Assistant

The University of Sheffield
Sheffield
07.2022 - 07.2022
  • I worked remotely in a large team using University issued equipment to guide prospective students applying through clearing to Sheffield University. I undertook remote training to use phone software and access student records in order to appropriately advise callers. I answered calls from both within the UK and abroad.
  • As the work was across Results Day and the days after, I gained experience working in a fast paced environment as there was a large number of prospective students. I also developed customer service skills and confidence in speaking to a wide range of people professionally and in a friendly manner. I also became familiar with quickly adapting to unfamiliar software and technology, and taking initiative to problem solve while on the phone, and proactively signpost callers where appropriate.

Skills Development Internship (Data Collection)

The University of Sheffield
Sheffield
06.2021 - 07.2021
  • In this role I worked with a team of student interns to update my department’s compliance with wider University goals of set Graduate Attributes. These Attributes reflect skills development that students ought to develop across their time at university, ranging from personal study skills to teamwork, sustainability, and self-confidence. In my data collection role, I compiled information across module outlines and Sheffield University webpages to identify which Graduate Attributes the department’s modules nurtured, and which they did not. This information was central to modules being updated to fit with wider Sheffield University goals, and to my team member’s work in developing visuals to display the graduate attributes covered in modules.
  • Through this role I gained experience in Google Suite tools, particularly Google Sheets, as well as developing teamwork skills and data collection skills. I also gained experience in working remotely

Student Ambassador

The University of Sheffield
01.2020 - 01.2022
  • I represented my university department at open days both in person and online. I chatted with students and parents, answering questions about university, living away from home, and providing advice and guidance about how to manage the transition to university and how to get the most out of higher education. I also worked with staff to produce presentation materials about the department, which I presented to prospective students at various open days. A similar format was translated into podcast format, in which I discussed university life with other ambassadors and members of staff.
  • My experience in this role greatly improved my confidence in working with large groups of young people, as well as my public speaking skills.

The University of Sheffield
Sheffield
09.2020 - 06.2022
  • I worked with a small number of first year students on a 1:1 basis as a point of support upon their entry to university. I met with them across the year to give them a chance to raise any questions or concerns, or worries about being at university, signposting them to appropriate university or Sheffield-based services where appropriate
  • This role helped me to develop my interpersonal skills, as I had to be sensitive and sympathetic to student's individual circumstances, and be a friendly, helpful person for them to turn to.

Outside of work and study, I have various interests. I enjoy reading, particularly detective and fantasy fiction, and Japanese novels. I am also passionate about music. I was an active member of the Rock Society at university, and enjoy collecting vinyls and going to concerts. I like to visit museums and galleries when I can, and occasionally draw. I like to keep up to date with current events both in the UK and abroad. As my specialist area is Japan, I have subscriptions to English language Japanese news publications. I also enjoy watching video essays about relevant topics, such as consumerism, media trends, and the impact of Covid-19 on how young people communicate. I also love spending time with my cat.
