Core Value
Reflecting on the series of projects I've done so far, even dating back to my foundation year, I found it surprising that the core value in my creative practice, ‘visual aesthetics', has been and will continue to be consistent. My favourite quote of a designer is “Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.” by William Morris.
Audience
The people I would like to reach through my work are especially those who are not fully aware of ordinary pleasures they can get by just observing the environment around them. For instance, feeling the change of seasons can be counted as one of those small pleasures, as it informs you the power and beauty of nature. For me, art is a form of luxury that can enrich people's lives, and illustration is a tool I am familiar with the most and can use well to provide that luxury for others.
Themes
The main themes I would like to address through my work include the beauty of nature, seasonality, and food which all connected to my personal interests and what I value in my life. My favourite film director Hayao Miyazaki from Studio Ghibli said ‘You might not realise but this world is beautiful. I make a film that communicates the beauty of the world', and which resonates with me. The driving force of my creativity often has roots in the desire of express and communicate the beauty of things, emotions, and moments that I find in my daily life.
As I am studying as a student, I have been working as a front of house waitress at a casual Korean restaurant at Soho. Although the job itself is not related to my academic study, after working a few years now I came to realise that the experience itself is very valuable. Here are a summary of my insights into my part time job so far:
