I am currently a gap year student and a reapplicant for dentistry. I believe by working as a dental nurse during my gap year will equip me with sufficient skills in order to enter the dental profession as well as boosting the strength of my application to university. The job as a dental nurse comes with very important roles such as patient care, instrument decontamination, equipment maintenance, patient records and infection control. The skills that I have attained make me very suitable for the job. Last year I undertook work experience in a dental clinic where I observed the dentist and dental nurse communicating to an anxious patient making them feel at ease. As well as this I also saw how the dental nurse worked alongside the dentist highlighting the importance of teamwork. I got to exercise these important skills at two care homes I also did work experience in. I communicated with residents of different ages and ethnicities as well as also different medical conditions tailoring to their needs. Both my work experience in a dental clinic and a care home introduced me to IPC. I noticed how the dentist changed gloves after every patient to maintain a clean working environment. Furthermore, the dental nurse cleaned the patient chair and shortly after carried out decontamination of the instruments used.
