Summary

I am a dedicated professional with extensive experience in case management and family advocacy, underpinned by a strong understanding of relevant legislation and policy. I have a proven ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams, supported by excellent communication skills and the ability to produce clear, high-quality reports. I am committed to making a meaningful impact on family support services and advancing equality for Deaf children and their families.

As the parent of a Deaf child, I bring valuable lived experience and insight into the challenges faced by families. For many years, I have been actively involved with my local Deaf Children’s Society, taking on roles such as Chairperson, Secretary, fundraiser, and representative at local Children’s Hearing Services Working Groups (CHSWG). These experiences have strengthened my leadership, organisational, and advocacy skills.

To support my child and broaden her opportunities, I learned British Sign Language (BSL) and achieved Level 2 certification. I have also engaged and established positive relationships with other Deaf charities, including Deaf Action.

My advocacy extends beyond my own family. I have successfully campaigned (alongside my daughter) for systemic change, including securing free access to BSL tuition for all Deaf children in Scotland from the age of five. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I led a campaign for clear face masks for Deaf children in Fife, ensuring communication was not compromised. Most recently, I supported my daughter through a legal challenge—working alongside NDCS—that resulted in a landmark change in Scottish case law, improving equal access to education for Deaf learners.

These achievements reflect my passion and unwavering commitment to the rights and wellbeing of Deaf children. I believe my experience, knowledge, and values align perfectly with the role of Community Connector, and I am eager to contribute to creating positive change for families across Scotland.
