Over the years, I’ve worked independently in Blood Sciences as an Associate Practitioner, gaining experience across a variety of laboratory sections. I’ve worked in Haematology, Coagulation, Blood Transfusion, and in Biochemistry, where I’ve been trained in Immunology, Quality, Newborn Screening, Special Biochemistry, and Automated Biochemistry. I’m now completing a Biomedical Science Apprenticeship, combining hands-on lab work with academic study, as I take the next step in my career.

Biochemistry Associate Practitioner

My current role provides a broad range of training and knowledge across Biochemistry, Immunology, Newborn Screening, and Quality. I rotate through multiple sections, gaining both manual and automated scientific skills while consistently following PPE, health & safety, and regulatory standards.

  • I am trained on WinPath LIMS and support sample reception, including specimen acceptance, rejection, and accurate sample requesting.
  • In Automated Biochemistry, I operate and maintain ROCHE track systems, including the cobas 8000 analysers (ISE, e801, c701), cobas p612/p701, and Infinity software, performing testing, calibrations, and quality controls.
  • Special Biochemistry provides manual experience, including calprotectin extraction, osmolarity testing, and HbA1c testing on the TOSOH G11.
  • I am privileged to train in one of the UK’s Newborn Screening laboratories, using the Panthera Puncher, VARIANT™ nbs, AutoDELFIA, and PerkinElmer DELFIA Xpress systems for prenatal and newborn screening.
  • In Immunology, I operate and maintain the BioCLIA 500/6500 analysers for autoimmune and allergy testing, running internal and external quality controls to ensure results meet acceptance criteria.
  • During my Quality rotation, I conduct audits in line with UKAS, MHRA, and UK NSC standards, reviewing documentation, recording evidence, and ensuring corrective actions are implemented.

While working in Biochemistry, I began a Biomedical Science Apprenticeship at the University of Portsmouth, combining hands-on laboratory experience with academic study. The apprenticeship will lead to a Biomedical Science degree, a completed IBMS portfolio, and eligibility for HCPC registration.

Accomplishments

  • I attended and gained a certificate for ‘Stepping into health science careers’, organised by Health Education England in 2018.
  • I completed a four-week scheme in 2018 - National Citizen Service (NCS); a leadership and activities program. NSC improved my awareness of being a team player and having deadlines on organising events. During NSC our team had to do volunteering work and present to the local council to gain funding and present to the local council to gain funding.
