Father/Care manager
c/o Irwin Mitchel solicitors AFMT personnel trust-Steeton
October 2018 to January 2024
Fairly complicated but bear with me! I sadly lost my wife in October 2019 and we were both full time carers for my severely disabled daughter Amy. Amy was 22 at the time her mum passed and as she had quadriplegic cerebral palsy, epilepsy, phenylketonuria and various other minor complications to add to the mix. I had available to me resources and a determined 'can do' attitude to enable me to source, recruit and manage a private care team of individuals whom as time passed became family and friends for life. In total I had nine staff on my team both full and part time to provide seven day, twenty four hour care. I used a case management company to provide all of us certified training and guidance with regards various legislation and obligations. Irwin Mitchel solicitors were in the background as they managed a trust fund that was the AFM trust of which I was one of the trustees. We were the first private care team in the UK to run, manage and implement a care team in this way and later it became known as Stand Alone Case Management that many case management companies around the UK are beginning to look at closely. Day to Day during this period I was very much hands on with some of her cares (I was still dad) which included gastrostomy, specialised dietary requirements, pulling shifts as and when required, hospital appointments and everything basically associated with her and her care teams wellbeing.
Left school in 1984 and my first paid employment was in a local textile mill for four years.
Began fresh employment with a family run engineering company in 1988 and left in 2001 as an assistant works manager.
Became a full time carer for my daughter along with my wife and became actively involved in various activities and groups helping and advising other families and individuals involved in the special needs environment.
Rebuilt several tractors and old Land rovers as well as competing as a family in horse carriage driving trials using a wheelchair adapted carriage for our daughter.
Sadly lost my wife in 2019 to cancer.
Built a private personal care team from scratch (see description below) up until my daughter passed away in January 2024.
Keeping myself busy helping out at a friends garage business part time, recovering customers cars, picking parts up and generally making tea unpaid.
Now looking for a new challenge!
