I'm currently in my second year at Manchester Metropolitan University studying a degree in Fashion Promotion which is a three year course. I am now looking to work in Manchester to fit in around my studies. When I leave University in two years' time, hopefully with a degree in Fashion Promotion, I would like to embark on a career within the fashion industry. Therefore, I am now looking to gain some experience within this sector by working in retail which specialises in clothing. This will give me an insight into current fashion trends, what appeals to customers and the business side of clothing sales. Hopefully, the experience I have gained in my current role in dealing with customers will help in this industry.
I work in a restaurant/coffee shop in the centre of Nantwich town. I started as a pot wash three years ago when I was 16 and worked my way up to front of house after three months.
My role now entails various responsibilities and tasks. A typical shift would involve me making coffees using the professional coffee machine, dealing with customers, taking orders and payments, serving food and drinks, answering phone calls to take orders for food collections or dealing with any enquiries and always giving a high standard of customer service and making sure people coming into the restaurant have an enjoyable experience. On occasion, customers can find fault with something and I am confident to deal with these problems that may arise. The owner frequently gives me the responsibility of having a set of keys, which I use to open and close the shop. These keys also allow me to have access to the safe which enables to me to cash up the tills at the end of the shifts and secure the takings.
We have many regulars that come in and over the years I have formed a good relationship with them, always greeting them with a smile and friendly conversation. The venue also caters for private functions later on in the evenings which I often work. We as a team have to make sure that the special occasion is made perfect for everyone attending. This involves a lot of interaction with the guests throughout the shift. I enjoy working with members of the public and also being part of a hard working team that makes the restaurant a success.
