  • Completed 23 weeks of basic training in the Royal Marines.
  • Learned a vast range of skills and techniques as part of becoming a front line soldier, such as: emergency battlefield first aid, weapons training, map reading, navigation, emergency underwater escape drills, CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear) warfare training, military law, patrolling, observation, camouflage and concealment, survival techniques.
  • Developed skills and qualities related to my personal development, including self-discipline, motivation, teamworking, respect for others, and pride in my performance and presentation.
  • Remained composed and focused in highly stressful situations, such as escaping a replica of a fully submerged helicopter cabin in the pitch black, participating in a training exercise to evacuate a seriously wounded casualty from a battlefield whilst under fire, and successfully navigating a large training between various checkpoints at night within a time limit.
  • Operated weaponry and communication systems safely by observing correct safety drills and procedures at all times, particularly in situations when live ammunition was being used.
  • Demonstrated effective verbal and non-verbal communication in a range of situations to convey key information to team-members. This included written communication in the form of intelligence reports to convey information such as detailed descriptions of vehicles, buildings, locations and people - to hand signals in tactical situations where discretion was paramount, alongside scale models of key locations and objectives made of wooden logs, leaves, branches, string and clay to act as a visual aid when planning complex exercises.
  • Participated in the planning and execution of complex training exercises including intelligence patrols, observation posts, ambushes and large-scale attacks on enemy occupied villages, all of which required the cooperation of many different people to consider different risks, strategies and approaches before collaborating all available intelligence into an effective strategy.
