Summary

I am a farmers daughter from Aberystwyth. We farm, beef and sheep.

I like to keep busy on the farm at home and play an active part on the day to day running of the farm on the evenings and weekend .

In my spare time I like to get out in to the country side with my horses,

I have my own stud were I breed Welsh Cobs. I back horses and often seen in the show ring or at local competitions bringing a youngster on.

I enjoy being a head nurse and feel especially lucky to have been in a mixed practice were I have been allowed to develop my skills in several areas. My area of interest are anaesthetic (Large or small animal.)

Work history

Head Nurse

Ystwyth Veterinary Practice LTD
Aberystwyth, Ceredigion
09.2003 - Current

I Started Work in Ystwyth Vets in Sept 2021 on a part time basis, whilst I studied in Animal Care (National Diploma) in Pibwrlwyd Carmarthen.

I then started work full time and studied in Pershore College to become a Registered Nurse.

I worked as a nurse for several years in Ystwyth. I am competent at large, small animal and equine work.

in 2011 I was made team leader for the nursing team which in turn lead me to become head nurse in 2014.

My nursing skills vary, I'm often seen out on farm helping with the practice Artificial Insemination with the sheep. This involves preparing the semen and checking temperature of the water baths etc. Discussing protocols with farmers and making sure the sheep have been prepared correctly.

Nursing in the surgery is varied from day to day.

I enjoy anaesthetic this being in large or small animals. I have been fortunate enough to be involved in several field anaesthetics, including sheep, horses, camels, calves and wolobies .

Ystwyth Vets have also runs a referral centre, Mills Referrals, I have been involved in the setting up of this business. This involved the careful management of the instruments that are needed, setting appointments and dealing with clients that travel from afar.

I am a Clinical Coach and have helped several students to become a Registered Nurse. This is a major part of my work daily, demonstrating to students how to perform a task to the highest standard. I have to be consistent with my work, all daily tasks should be performed to a high standard as I'm aware students are watching even when not actively demonstrating.

The head nurse brings a different aspect to my working life. I have to be fair and understanding to the needs of the staff and clients.

My role is to prepare rota's for the nursing assistants, student nurses and Registered Nurses.

I stay up to date with the latest nursing developments to provide best patient care. This involves care plans discussing with the team (Nurses and Vets) the best options for the practice. Making sure there is excellent care and focusing of patient safety and comfort.

I purse Continuous Professional Development, the most recent Course in Leadership in the Practice.
