Matthew Tweed

• Lead the Fix the Fells volunteer programme, working Lakes-wide to deliver upland path repair and maintenance. Responsible for strategic volunteer planning, operational delivery, compliance, training, and partnership representation. Work closely with Area Rangers, Rangers, the LDNPA Fix the Fells Ranger, and the Partnership Manager to support delivery of the strategic programme.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage a programme of volunteer work parties and path maintenance annually across the Lake District fells.
• Recruit, train, and develop volunteers and staff, creating clear progression pathways and enabling independent volunteer-led work parties.
• Support strategic planning and project prioritisation through regular collaboration with the LDNPA Fix the Fells Ranger and Fix the Fells Partnership Manager.
• Ensure high standards of H&S, risk management, and compliance for all volunteer operations.
• Coach and develop staff in technical upland pathwork and volunteer supervision.
• Manage logistics and resource allocation for upland projects across multiple Lakes-wide workstreams.

Key Achievements

• Grew the volunteer programme to 140+ active members, improving volunteer engagement and efficacy.
• Built and implemented a structured framework to safely and effectively deliver a programme of volunteer-led pathwork initiatives.
• Introduced new H&S and operational systems, improving compliance, reducing risk, and fostering a safe working culture.
• Developed new techniques and initiatives to broaden our reach, building strong stakeholder relationships in the process.

• Led landscape management and restoration projects for contractors, staff, and diverse and under-represented groups across the Lakes. Strengthened public understanding and engagement through practical learning and interactive experiences, enhanced visitor experience by maintaining and upgrading Basecamp facilities.

• Planned and delivered upland conservation projects, ecological monitoring, and volunteer engagement in a highly designated landscape. Provided visitor interpretation and educational activities to build public appreciation of and engagement with the Cairngorms National Park.

• Ran a successful landscaping business delivering bespoke projects with full responsibility for design, budgeting, client relationships, and project completion.
