  • Returning to the prison service I am a Prison Officer on the residential units at HMP Bure where my main duties consist of the following.

  • When I joined the prison service I spent 12 weeks away at training college during this time I was taught Crisis management, Communication skills, Security awareness and control and restraint.
  • Every day at work I experience one or more of the above situations.
  • In 2009 I was promoted to Senior Officer where during that time I had been managing two housing blocks and the main reception of the jail. which include management off staff and Prisoners dealing with their care and their individual needs.
  • I have now served 13years for the HM Prison service during that time I have been in many situations some of which have to be handled delicately with the upmost discretion to maintain the confidentiality and confidence of all those involved in the situation knowing it will be handled professionally in a timely manner.
  • For example, when the unfortunate event happens when a Prisoner dies in custody whether it's by natural causes or he takes his own life I have to seal the cell pending police and internal investigation and liaise with the families of the departed.
  • In my current role as a Senior officer in HM Prison Norwich I manage the Operations Department within that role I am responsible for the security of the establishment.
  • My key roles re as Follows.
  • My duties include Management and Delegation of All Operational Support Grade and Officer Grade staff on the group.
  • Completing Risk assessments and land surveys to send Prisoners out of the establishment for hospital and funeral visits ensuring the safety of the public/staff and Prisoner.
  • Management of Both Gate lodges and Issue of Keys, Radios and Cuffs.
  • Throughout the day conduct radio safety checks ensuring the safety of all staff.
  • The implementation of the Body Camera system to provide another safety feature for staff to carry out their duties.
  • Surveying of evidence collated from the body cam footage and preparing it for use in external and internal enquiries.
  • Collating the Names Rank and Employment of all staff to Log for the Issue of the correct Keys for their role.
  • Investigating any key compromise or Tool Compromise that could put the security of the establishment at risk and submit the evidence of my findings to the governor to take to appropriate action.
  • Investigating misconduct by staff.
  • Maintaining that any evidence being handled within the prison service is handled correctly and logged for chain of custody for evidence reports.
  • Using Microsoft word and Excel to draw up a staff roster on a weekly basis.
  • Ensure all KPTs and KPI's are met within the Operations Group.
  • Also as Part of my role I sit with a board of other managers and conduct interviews for new staff joining the HM Prison service.
  • On doing this I have gained a vast amount of knowledge on interviewing skills and the correct way to conduct interviews.
  • Also, I work very closely with the court's particularly Norwich and Ipswich Magistrates and Crown courts as part of my management area is the Prison Reception where offenders arrive straight from court to HMP Norwich I am responsible for making sure that all the legal documentation is correct and HM Prison service can legally detain the Offender in custody.
  • On many occasions, I have had to attend court hearings to give evidence on certain events and crimes that have happened within the Prison system.
