Voluntary Swim Coach

Voluntary for Ulverston Swimming Club
Ulverston, Cumbria
08.2008 - Current

My role as Head Coach at Ulverston Amateur Swimming Club is primarily the welfare and well-being of swimmers in our Club. I coach mostly swimmers aged 12 to 20 years old. We are presently able to motivate a large number of swimmers to attend up to 15 hours a week for swim training. We manage to get them to work hard via effective communication and engaging with them directly. Gone are the days of trying to push unwilling teenagers into activities. We achieve this because we can attain engagement and develop common goals both as a team and as individuals. We have many talented swimmers in Ulverston but as a Coach, the greatest reward comes from the application of the less talented.

Skills

All the tasks I have performed have involved communicating and interacting with people Over the many years, I have gained experience in convincing, motivating, and supporting individuals to set goals and attain targets

Working with teenagers and as a dentist requires patience Teenagers have different abilities so patience is an asset

As a coach and a dentist, you often need to problem-solve Not all issues that teenagers come up against are easy to solve but trying to circumvent or overcome those issues and then help the pupil to adapt will be rewarding and of great benefit to the pupil

As a swim coach, I have lessons that stretch into the future However, it is not always suitable to plough on with a lesson plan or course of action and I can adapt plans depending on a changing situation

As a coach and the owner of a dental practice, you have to become a leader It's one of the tasks to motivate and encourage your team to move in the same direction with a common goal If you can help lead teenagers on a common path and try and let them see what they can do it will be rewarding for all those involved

In dentistry I have undergone child welfare training and attended courses on how to recognize signs of abuse, both physical and emotional;

As a swim coach, I coach swimmers for up to 3 hours a day several times a week It is vital to keep the swimmers engaged and stimulated

In February 2023 I arranged a week training camp in Lanzarote

This was a success and very beneficial for everyone concerned
