Maira Muqqaddam

In my current role in transplant surgery, I cover the transplant ward, manage cases in the High Dependency Unit (HDU) and Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and assess transplant-related referrals in the Emergency Department (ED).

This role has granted me significant exposure to caring for critically ill patients and has enhanced my skills in addressing complex surgical complications.

I have actively participated in operating theatres and maintain a detailed surgical logbook, which is available upon request.

• Serve as an undergraduate clinical supervisor for sixth-year medical students, conducting regular teaching sessions.
• Currently completing the Foundation Programme in Clinical Education through Cambridge University to enhance teaching skills and develop professional competencies.
• Actively involved in departmental audits, contributing to quality improvement initiatives.
• Currently undertaking an audit project, reinforcing commitment to evidence-based practice within the department.

• During my two-month Upper GI Surgery placement, I observed a range of cases in the operating theatre, enhancing my understanding of surgical techniques and patient management. I also gained valuable experience in outpatient clinics and ward work, focusing on preoperative, postoperative, and day-to-day surgical care.

In my role within the Emergency Department, I was responsible for triaging patients and providing acute care across a wide variety of cases. This included managing patients with both minor trauma and complex, acute conditions, which required prompt assessment and intervention. I gained significant experience working under high-pressure situations, adapting to a rapid turnover of patients while maintaining effective and compassionate care.

This exposure enhanced my ability to make quick, informed decisions in critical situations, and it helped me build resilience and efficiency in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.

During my FY1 year, I rotated through two surgical specialties (General Surgery and ENT) and two medical specialties (General Medicine and Radiology), gaining a broad and comprehensive understanding of both medical and surgical practices.

• General Medicine: Managed acute and chronic conditions, developed treatment plans, and participated in diagnostic assessments.
• Radiology: Assisted in imaging procedures and contributed to image analysis and preliminary interpretation.
• General Surgery: Participated in surgeries, preoperative care, and postoperative management, including wound care.
• ENT: Conducted patient evaluations, assisted in minor procedures, and managed emergencies like epistaxis and foreign body removal.
