Additional Information

I attended a 1 week work experience course with Arcadis (project managing/ quantity surveying construction company at their offices in London in July 2024).

During the week I learnt skills such as:

  • Introduction to the Construction Industry: Gained an overview of how construction projects are planned and executed, from initial groundwork to final finishes.
  • Health & Safety Awareness: Learned about the importance of site safety, personal protective equipment (PPE), risk assessments, and following proper procedures to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Basic Site Skills: Observed and assisted with hands-on tasks such as measuring, material handling, basic tool use, and site clean-up—developing an appreciation for attention to detail and physical effort involved.
  • Teamwork & Communication: Worked alongside tradespeople, site managers, and labourers, learning how clear communication and collaboration are essential for a smooth-running project.
  • Time Management & Reliability: Understood the importance of punctuality, sticking to deadlines, and being dependable in a fast-paced, time-sensitive environment.
  • Professional Conduct: Experienced what it means to act professionally on-site—respecting supervisors, following instructions, and maintaining a positive, can-do attitude.

At the end of my experience the company were trying to encourage me to take on their apprenticeship scheme and think that I could pursue a very good career within that industry.
