Personal Experiences and Skills

  • Since commencing my Mechanical Engineering degree, I have wanted to see the application of the theory I have been working on and the physical engineering process. I have done this through my involvement in Formula Student. Within my first semester, I secured a role in the Vehicle Dynamics sub-team, where I am currently responsible for the design and development of the front wheel assembly. Utilising SolidWorks, I have moved beyond basic 3D modelling to focus on system integration, managing the complex packaging of steering pick-up points, braking components, and suspension hardpoints. A primary objective of my work is the optimisation of the assembly to reduce unsprung mass. By performing iterative structural analyses and Finite Element Analysis (FEA), I am ensuring that the part remains lightweight enough to enhance the vehicle’s transient handling while maintaining the structural integrity required to withstand high-magnitude cornering and braking loads.
  • I have gained many skills through many different activities throughout my lifetime. One of these skills is discipline developed through years of competitive sports and high-responsibility employment. As a member of Wick Academy U18s and various other teams, like university football and rugby teams, I have spent over seven years operating within high-performance team environments. These experiences have instilled in me the vital skills of communication, leadership, and the 'team-first' mentality necessary to thrive in a multidisciplinary engineering project like Formula Student, where the success of the vehicle depends on the coordination of various sub-systems.
  • This professional discipline is further reflected in my role as a Leisure Assistant at the East Caithness Community Facility. This position demands a high level of operational safety and the ability to follow rigorous Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Helping to perform backwashes requires focus and is a simple but essential maintenance practice. It involves me turning off the pumps at the instrument board and the U.V., then reversing the valves on the tank, waiting until the U.V. filter cools, turning everything back on at the instrument board and putting the valves back together. This further improves my practical experience of working with instruments and builds my knowledge of the mechanics behind the running of the pool.
