Working in the justice system has always been a long-term goal for me, driven by a strong belief in fairness, accountability, and the potential for people to change. I previously applied to join the police and although i was unsuccessful, the process strengthened my commitment to finding a meaningful role within criminal justice. Because of this I want to take a moment to be honest and transparent about situations that may jeopardize my application.
In 2022 I received a recorded warning for a minor assault. At the time, I made a poor decision in a situation that escalated unnecessarily. I fully accepted responsibility for my actions and cooperated completely with police. Since then I have made real, lasting changes to ensure I never find myself in a similar situation again. Using the experience to grow in maturity, emotional control, and self-awareness.
I would like to be transparent in acknowledging that my brother is currently in custody at HMP Addiewell. I fully understand the importance of professional boundaries, integrity and impartiality required in the role of a prison officer. My personal connection does not impact my ability to carry out duties fairly, objectively and in line with operational and ethical standards. I am committed to upholding the highest level of professionalism and would never allow personal circumstances to interfere with my responsibilities or the safety and security of the prison environment. If necessary, I would be more than willing to work in an establishment other than HMP Addiewell to avoid any perceived conflict of interest.
My time as a car sales executive developed my ability to communicate assertively, manage challenging conversations and remain professional while working to a target. I learnt how to balance firmness with fairness and how to build trust with people who may initially be resistant – an experience I believe aligns closely with the interpersonal demands of being a prison officer.
As a carer, I was responsible for supporting vulnerable individuals with daily tasks, often under emotional or physical stress. Which taught me patience, empathy and the importance of maintaining boundaries, all while showing respect and compassion. I understand how to de-escalate difficult situations and provide consistent support, all of which is crucial in a prison environment.
I also have a strong team ethic, demonstrated through my background in rugby, where I was proudly rewarded young player of the year 2023-2024 I thrive in disciplined environment, I work well under pressure and I understand the importance of routine, consistency and integrity- all core values of custodial work
