I always been a driven individual and through my sheer perseverance, I was able to attain a Masters' in Pharmacy. However my desire to improve and learn led me to follow my dream in becoming a doctor.
During my fourth year of medicine, we established a brand new. The aim was to provide study material to not only medical students but also pharmacy and dental students as well as nurses and pharmacology students.
A brand new society required significant effort from the team. I subsequently became the president of the society in 5th-year medicine. This role required a significant level of organisation and time management. This is because each individual on the committee had a role and it was crucial for the harmonic functioning of the society and function. My role was to organise each member, ensuring they were comfortable with their workload and supporting them when necessary. Being the president made me improve my communication skills as I learned to tailor my interaction with each member to bring out the best. I significantly improved my management skills, particularly during the exam period as when I would get busy, I learned to delegate certain roles to ensure a smooth running of the society whilst not compromising my education, but also ensuring to utilise each member’s talent when another member was busy with their exams and educational responsibilities. This allowed everyone in the society to feel important and valued. Due to my work ethos, our society managed to hold a national revision series for medical students on PSA hosting over 1000 students over a course of 2 weeks. This was an extremely proud moment for our committee.
During my undergraduate degree, as a society, we managed to raise over £2000. The money raised was sent to a charity in Bangladesh supporting women through labour.
We worked as a team and came up with a variety of ideas including, selling cupcakes, baking competitions, and auctioning. Together with another committee member, we were responsible for the auction and we managed to acquire various paintings, cakes as well antiques from a range of altruistic individuals. We then planned how we would auction and executed perfectly each item for auction at the appropriate time for the right audience to ensure a maximum profit. We aimed to sell everything on the auction table using our organisational skills, communication skills, as well as interpersonal skills.
I have also been involved in coaching football to children. I was fortunate enough to be part of a local charity organisation that hosted footballing sessions for underprivileged children. The children ranged from 10-15 years of age. The sessions lasted 2 hours but would require great organisation and time management as well as teamwork skills with other volunteers on the day. I organised coaching sessions in various methods of communication to meet the need of every individual. This significantly improved my adaptability and my communication skills. Committing through those sessions, I not only improved my listening skills but was also inspired by the teamwork students would develop through their time.
Being involved in research and audits paved the way for me to obtain an academic foundation post. I have been involved in several audit projects, some of which have been published. I landed a project through sheer perseverance with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in collaboration with the World Health Organisation. The audit aimed to look at the gender and ethnic diversity in ophthalmology and optometry leadership across the globe. We were able to highlight the disparity across the globe with gender and ethnicity amongst leadership roles. The audit was celebrated and was published consequently.
I also worked on an audit alongside and under the supervision of orthopaedic consultant surgeons at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital. The aim was to identify whether reverse shoulder procedure in patients with humeral cancer was better than conventional treatment. We were able to underline an important factor in determining the overall success of the procedure. I gave an oral presentation of our findings at the international conference and managed to get our results published in their journal.
I have consistently worked towards a career in surgery. I have gone above and beyond to ensure I attain the necessary skills to further my career in surgery and my passion to become a better day grows daily. I loved to learn and develop not only as a doctor but as a human and seek every opportunity to work on my craft.
