Head of Subject/ Head of Key Stage 4

MOD Schools
2013.08 - 2024.07
  • When I took over the drama department there were many changes which needed to be implemented to allow for student progress to continue to thrive. One of the big changes that I made was introducing A-Level Film Studies allowing a wider range of students to be involved in Arts subjects. This subject is wonderful for supporting and developing students literature skills and often results in a positive valued added in terms of student progress.
  • I also entered the school in the National Theatre Connection the National Theatre Connections project twice the first time working on a play called Hacktivists exploring the idea of youth engagement in real-world situations via online activities and the second time we performed a play called Flesh which surrounded a group of students in the wilderness. I alternated these projects with published works such as The Suitcase Kid by Jacqueline Wilson, Roald Dahl's The Witches and pre-covid we had almost completed Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I introduced a student run Film Club and an Arts Awards programme. These were all new ventures for the school and great opportunities to engage a wide range of the students in valuable hands on projects. I am currently undertaking a full curriculum review to ensure that my curriculum mapping falls in line with current thinking.
  • Last year I was appointed Head of Key Stage 4, DDSL. In this role I have been fortunate enough to gain a wealth of pastoral experience from organising events and holding assemblies to engaging with a variety of outside agencies and safeguarding issues. I have implemented whole school strategies for addressing discrimination and developed a tutor program to maintain a positive focus on this core theme. By analysing attainment and attendance data I have been able to create bespoke mentoring programmes ensuring that all students have the best chance of reaching their potential. I manage a team of 12 consisting of form tutors and LSA mentors and coordinate events across the key stage. I have also been appointed as a Lead Teacher as recognition of my excellent classroom management skills. Within this post I have already been responsible for running whole staff training and creating an overview of the in house CPD programme in school. These posts have given me a wide spanning overview of all aspect of school life.

Head of Subject

MOD Schools
2008.01 - 2013.08
  • When I started in this post I was a mainscale teacher just teaching drama. Within two years I was promoted to Head of Department and took on my first A-Level Film Studies students. Although I had taught KS3 English in my previous post learning this literature based subject for post-16 study was a huge step up. It was very challenging however, I really felt like I had found a true second subject. During my first year teaching it my students all graded C or above - a trend which has continued throughout my career. I also continued to offer A-Level Theatre Studies and was commended by the exam board for their exception devised work which gained them full marks.
  • In this post I also introduced the National Theatre Connections project alongside whole school productions which included Dracula Spectacula, Annie Jr. and Oedipus (extracts). I also developed the Arts Awards programme putting an entire year group through the Bronze award in 2010. I was also responsible for setting up grading across KS3 and establishing the assessment criteria. I ran regular theatre visits back to the UK mostly on my own but occasionally with another adult. I also ran trips within Germany to TV studios and also to Berlin to learn about the German film making industry.

Subject Teacher

Woodhouse High School
Tamworth
2006.09 - 2007.12
  • This was my first teaching post and I completed my NQT year in this school. I was primarily appointed to establish drama at KS3 and create schemes of work and assessment criteria. I also taught KS3 English to bottom set students. I successfully introduced drama on a carousel across KS3 alongside Music and Art. I established marking sheets and assessment progress walls to show students where they needed to develop their skills. I also establish regular theatre visits locally and to London. In my time here I worked with the Head of subject on Oklahoma.
