Research and Presentation Experience

(2018): Remarkable RAR (retinoic acid receptor): new receptor target for brain disease. Supervisors: Prof Mccaffery, Peter and Dr Guy Bewick

A three-month laboratory work which involved simulating motor neurone disease by reducing nerve transmission at the neuromuscular junction as seen in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and testing a potential therapeutic target (retinoic acid receptor). The diaphragm of laboratory mice was dissected, nerve transmission was reduced (using an assay), treated with different concentrations of retinoic acid analogues and restoration of nerve transmission was determined by measuring muscle tension (twitch and tetanus) using a muscle tension rig (electrophysiology).

Key Techniques: drug metabolism electrophysiology, animal handling, pharmacology of retinoic acids, experiment/method development and data handling.
