Gloucester,Gloustershire

Summary

  • I am currently a student going into my third year of university. I am able to effectively manage my full-time study whilst working part-time for a local social enterprise that focuses on food sustainability and making food accessible regardless of price, and thus supporting our local community.
  • I am passionate about people and the planet and have become particulary interested in trees and their physiology and the many assets they provide to us and the environmental, which is why I am eager to learn new skills and information that helps them continue to do so.
  • I have volunteered in the past with the Stroud Cotswold Canal Trust, helping to keep some of the areas clean by planting new shrubs or clearing the canal by pulling out weeds and other invasive plant life.
  • I have also volunteered in Ghana for two weeks through fundraising to help build and teach at a local school.
  • My passion for sailing continues both recreationally and competetively as well as with the British Blind Sailing Team when I can.
  • I enjoy keeping active by staying fit at my local CrossFit gym, gardening and going for walks and being as close to nature as possible.

I have just finished my second year in Environmental Studies, an undergraduate degree focusing on the multiple challenges, specifically environmental issues that people and ecosystems face today. The degree aims to equip you with the knowledge and skills to address these challenges, which can only be done if the complex connections between the societal (social, political, economic, cultural and ethical) and biophysical (geological, physical, ecological) dimensions of these issues are addressed. Thus providing an interdisciplinary approach to addressing these issues.

I chose the Open University to study as I was diagnosed with anorexia nervosa in 2021 and, sadly, was unable to finish my A-levels as I needed clinical treatment. I discovered that, although I wasn't well enough to attend an in-person university, I still had a passion for the environment and a determination to learn about the issues our planet and people face. The Open University was therefore the best way to do this while still focusing on my recovering.

  • As its remote learning, I have had to learn how to manage and organise my time, whislt also working 2 days a week at The Long Table.
  • I am gaining a combination of soial and nautral sience knowledge and skills to equip me with an innterdisplary approach and understndiing of the enviornmental issues we face.
