I am currently a third year student nurse due to qualify shortly and have completed a range of clinical placements over the last three years including medical, surgical (including theatres), community and acute settings and I am due to undertake my final placement in A&E. The knowledge and skills I have gained from these experiences are vast, helping me to become a well-rounded professional able to adapt to a range of settings. I have cared for patients with a wide range of complex needs, becoming familiar with co-morbidities and poly-pharmacy, understanding how this can affect the nursing care that I give a patient and how I plan care around this. I have developed competence in a range of skills such as medicines administration via a range of routes, care planning, patient assessment and infection prevention. I also have excellent knowledge of legal aspects of nursing, such as the Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty frameworks. I am competent in identifying the need for safeguarding and I am able to identify when to escalate concerns to the relevant agencies. Whilst I am increasingly confident and competent, I ensure to always work within my scope of practice and seek additional guidance when required, as stated in the NMC code as well as competence being one of the 6Cs of nursing. I have also developed key clinical skills essential to being a staff nurse such as venepuncture, cannulation, wound care and catheterisation, as well as continence care and preventing pressure damage.
I am compassionate and empathetic, with a strong commitment to delivering safe, effective and person-centred care. I prioritise the dignity and preferences of my patients at all times, being an advocate for my patients even when this can be challenging, demonstrating courage and communication, 2 of the 6Cs of nursing. Having participated in several MDT meetings, I make sure to always be the voice for my patient, ensuring that their best interests as well as preferences are kept at the forefront of all care planning. I have excellent communication skills, always developing therapeutic relationships with my patients and their loved ones, as well as good professional relationships with my colleagues and wider members of the MDT. I have a lot of experience of communicating with patients in a variety of ways, having cared for many patients with cognitive impairments or learning disabilities, ensuring to always provide the same respect and dignity to everyone I meet.
Throughout my training, especially in my last year, I have developed time management and delegation skills, ensuring that the highest standards of care are always maintained even in a busy environment. On placement, I have cared for patients of varying acuity, ensuring timely observations, escalation of concerns and accurate documentation. These experiences have helped to strengthen my clinical judgement and confidence in decision making and I am becoming much more independent within my provision of care.
As I move into the phase of my career where I will be a newly qualified nurse, I am committed to reflective practice and continuous professional development. Throughout my time at university I have taken great pride in maintaining an accurate portfolio, demonstrating my progression towards the NMC standards. I am always open to feedback and support from my colleagues, as I know this will help me develop into the best nurse I can possibly be. I have always abode to the NMC Standards for Future Nurses, ensuring safe and effective evidence-based care.
I am a reliable, adaptable and enthusiastic individual who understands the importance of professionalism, accountability and evidence-based practice, ensuring I regularly read recent articles to ensure my practice is up to date. I am excited to begin my career as a Registered Nurse and to provide high-quality care while continuing to learn and grow within your organisation.
