This period also included a spell as education correspondent, working on the political team during general elections and covering the early days of the new Blair government.

A member of the launch team behind the newspaper revolution, which brought out the first national newspaper printed in full colour and using computers.

Covered many major stories including the Hillsborough disaster, the Piper Alphas North Sea oil rig disaster, Pope John Paul II's tour of the USA, and the Troubles in Northern Ireland.

Working for Britain's national news agency, first at its Fleet Street offices, before becoming north west regional correspondent, based in Liverpool and covering Merseyside, Lancashire, Cheshire and North Wales.

Regular casual shifts at evenings and weekends working from the northern office of the Daily Mail.
