I am an enthusiastic student at Swansea University, studying for a degree in Materials Science and Engineering. I have greatly enjoyed my first year here, and I am proud of my end of year results (78% overall, successfully tracking towards a First) which have reaffirmed to me that I made the right choice both in terms of subject and location. Academic studies become so much easier when you are genuinely interested and engaged with the subject matter !
I am repeatedly employed during summer vacation periods by a local landscape gardener whose clients include many high-end properties in the local area and who have high expectations for standards, work quality and timekeeping - I am pleased to say that I frequently complete tasks autonomously which gives a good indication of the trust and empowerment that is placed with me.
I have also been a volunteer scout leader for many years, leading activities, providing mentorship and helping young people discover their passions. Additionally, whilst completing my A Levels, I developed an outreach programme of practical science lessons for local primary school students, traveling weekly to different schools across the county. I was also asked to lead the organisation of an end of year science fair with over 400 students attending and this featured in the local press. I feel I can communicate in an engaging, stimulating and effective manner, with empathy and passion.
Prior to starting at Swansea University, I was lucky enough to spend a few days with the cross country pipeline group at Esso Petroleum, to understand how materials engineers are involved in corrosion monitoring, defect identification and repair techniques for high pressure underground pipelines running between the Refinery in Southampton and Fuels Terminals across the UK. It was fantastic to see how Materials Engineering can be practically applied in the workplace and this really helped me make my initial choice of degree.
Personally, I enjoy outdoor and adventure activities, including rock climbing, wild camping, skiing, dinghy sailing, mountain biking and more recently cross country running. I play badminton at club level and have represented the university. I hope to complete my first half marathon in the next few months. In 2025, I received my Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award at the Palace which I felt was well worth the effort required and appreciate the personal growth that it stimulated in me.
My other passion is for TVR - an old school car manufacturer that created dramatic and unconventional designs (my father is lucky enough to own one and we enjoy going on both local, national and european events), We recently drove it down to Italy and back across the alpine passes. I love the design, analogue engineering, fibreglass and noise and I actively help with the day to day maintenance. I value the father & son bond that it creates for us as I grow older - it keeps us very close.
I hope my CV provides some insights into who I am, my skills, interests and capabilities. I feel I am creative, resourceful, enthusiastic and resilient and like to work hard to meet a challenge. Hopefully you can see these qualities coming through in my personal development to date and that they match with a work placement opportunity that you have. I really want to grow my experience in this field and work hard to support an employer who is willing to give me a chance to show what I can do. Thank you for your interest.
