Summary

Since qualifying as a nurse in 2020, I have been working on a neurosurgical ward at Southmead Hospital in Bristol. To excel in this role, I have utilised effective communication and interpersonal skills, alongside a flexible and collaborative approach which are paramount to deliver successful patient care. I have demonstrated a willingness to extend and develop existing skills which are essential in excelling in this role. Notably, my approachability, friendliness, and establishment of strong rapport with both colleagues and patients characterise my nursing practice. Operating in a fast-paced environment has honed my ability to adapt to varying workloads while consistently maintaining a commitment to delivering a high quality of care, a skill that I consider foundational to my professional repertoire. As aligned with the Trust’ values I actively advocate for principles such as collaboration, respect, quality care provision, and enhancement of well-being in my daily work.

Over the last three years, I have provided care to patients on a neurosurgical ward, assuming responsibility for their nursing needs. I have demonstrated competence in delivering evidence-based nursing by consistently updating and accurately documenting my training. Throughout my nursing journey, effective communication has been a cornerstone of my practice. I have engaged with patients, their families, and the multi-disciplinary team to ensure optimal care, providing support to relatives and fostering teamwork. This is evident in my proactive approach to escalating deteriorating patients, involving patients and families in decision-making, and advocating for both patients and staff when necessary. I have also been involved with the care of vulnerable patients, those with disabilities, and those facing safeguarding concerns, always upholding their dignity and respecting their beliefs. Noteworthy qualities that I have learnt during my time on this ward include adaptability to unpredictable work patterns and my caring and responsible attitude. Furthermore, I have learnt the ability to navigate distressing situations, positioning me as a valuable team member capable of working autonomously and contributing to the development of others.
