The use of power tools.

Towards the end of my employment with Mr Maguire, I gained promotion to team leader. Within this role, I was in charge of a squad of builders. This promotion enabled me to develop skills and knowledge in various areas, such as:

  • Building with brick, ensuring that brick is correctly jointed and gauged.
  • Ensuring site debris is cleared away at the end of every day, as many chicken houses are erected on working farms.
  • Health and safety while working in environments where there is a lot of machinery moving.

Skills

During my career as a builder and through the completion of the assessor's award, I have gained many skills which are transferable into the role of bricklaying tutor Some of these skills are

  • an extensive knowledge of reading plans
  • Setting out houses from foundations to completion for block, or brick work
  • Knowledge of how to work out quantities of block, brick, sand, and cement which are required
  • An extensive knowledge of trowel skills for various builds

From completing my assessor's award, I learnt that it is important to remember that students are only learning, and this should be taken into consideration whilst marking their work I also learnt that everyone learns at a different pace, and therefore it is important to provide everyone with the opportunity to develop their skills at their pace
