Journalist with over four years experience helping produce two papers per week for a reputable regional publication. I have proven I have a strong news sense and the capacity to turn ideas, tip-offs and rumours into fully realised stories. As well as having shown I can produce well-crafted, hard-nosed news stories, I have also demonstrated a flair for feature writing, particularly the kind of stuff that allows me to say something about a community by getting to know the people within it. I am more than happy to get involved in whatever is going on in order to get speaking to people who might be able to say something, interesting, insightful, funny, controversial or revealing. For the last three years I have written a weekly column called One For The Road, in which I write, usually with a kind of tongue-in-cheek, self-aware wit, about everything from the absurdities of local life to the latest developments in international geopolitics.
In the Ulster Herald my responsibilities were wide-ranging in the whatever-is-required way that is probably quite typical of a local reporter. In my time there I am sure I wrote close to 1,000 stories.
I was mainly writing copy for print, most of which would then be
posted online as digital coverage. I also created stories specifically for our online audience. Within two months of being in the door, I was one of the most industrious journalists on the payroll.
Writing a mix of hard news, community stories, participatory features, obituaries, culture and entertainment stuff, plus my weekly column, 'One For The Road', I became - and remained until I left - one of the busiest and, according to my ex-editor, naturally-gifted writers in region.
I will give supporting examples of my work and more specific details within the question and answer part of the application.
Usual factory fare - my time was divided between stacking product into pallets (hard part) and then taking those pallets to
the loading bay (easier part).
