This has been a current role for 5 years now.

Working at Droitwich Spa has proven very rewarding, allowed the learning of new skills in Opthalmology and the revisit of ENT and Minor Orthopaedics.

I have been fortunate to learn Endoscopy and attend training as a First Surgical Assistant in 2024. This role has proven to be extremely rewarding and has allowed a wider knowledge base into procedures and the surgical skill required as well as delivering effective assistance.

These additional roles have also proven to improve personal flexibility and have assisted in the efficiency and productivity within the department .

In recent months, there has been opportunity to lead the surgical lists and assist our former General Lead during her transition to Deputy by once again reprising my Urology based knowledge and taking responsibility for the surgical equipment we have and ensuring it is in full working order with trays being complete. Alongside this, there is also the care for the consumable drugs required for the laser venous procedures, learning how to request items on the Circle system, looking ahead at lists and cases to highlight possible requirements. The insight gained has led me to feel more driven to deliver the best outcome possible and improve where necessary.

There has been a regular opportunity to act as a Mentor to new staff and staff undergoing further training to become accomplished Operating Department Practitioners and students coming to observe.

During this time, my own inter personal skills and learning has advanced, improved relationships with colleagues and given a new outlook on the respect for teamwork within the hospital.

I worked as a Urology Scrub Practitioner/ Urology Speciality Lead at Spire for 4 years.

I enjoying a variety procedures from minor Circumcisions and Micro Vasectomy Reversal to more complex cases such as Laparoscopic Nephrectomies and Laser guided cases such as Ureterenoscopies and Holmium Laser Enucleation of Prostates.

I have led lists and staff, ensured surgeons and procedural needs were met inclusive of required equipment and consumables at all times.

I liaised with colleagues and Speciality Representatives with regards to hiring and supply of equipment required.

Following my Laser training from previous employment, I also took an opportunity to attend a London based Course enabling my Role of Lead for Laser Safety which ensured Team Safety, Correct Practice and liaising with an external Local Laser Safety Supervisor to also ensure all Protocols and Policies were regularly updated.

I took responsibility for Stock control, as well as requesting Company quotes in order to assist purchases and replacements of existing equipment inclusive of new camera system and fluid warming cabinet for our Urology theatre.

During my 24 years at Goodhope, I enjoyed a varied career.

From 1992 -2000 I worked primarily in Anaesthetics, gaining experience in routine Anaesthesia, Emergency and Obstetrics and some Paediatric.

From 2000-2016 I worked as a Scrub Practitioner with the Urology team where I was fortunate to gain skills and learning within this speciality. I became specialised in Laser work, attending a two day course with Boston Scientific.

My other areas of interest were in Penile Oncology and Penile Implants and Laparoscopic Nephrectomies in which I was fortunate to lead, order consumables and build surgical instrument trays for.

At Goodhope, I was able to enjoy many scrub roles for Gynaecology, General Surgery, Colo-rectal, Breast and Plastics, Emergency work, Minor Orthopaedic and Trauma and some Endoscopy.
