I have effectively acted as manager in the manager absence.   • As deputy ward sister I have clinical and management duties to fulfil.
  • I act as ward manager when the ward manager is not present, including A/L and paternity leave. Also, at start of my role as deputy sister acted as manager while waiting for the manager to start the role.
  • In the clinical setting I'm responsible to coordinate the nursing team, participate in ward rounds with the medical team and escalate needs to the Multidisciplinary team.
  • We are looking after patients from different specialties such as medical, gastroenterology and mainly general surgery.
  • The duties required on the ward in general are, monitoring and treatment of wounds, administration of medication in the different routes, monitoring patients with local anesthetic and Patient control anesthesia, venipuncture, administration of blood products, administration of enteral and parental nutrition.
  • As a senior staff nurse, I'm also responsible to teach, supervise and access new starters with the different competencies.
  • I also conduct audits and ensure results are shared and create plans for improvement in the different areas.
  • I have created a newsletter for the ward that I publish every 3 months, when possible, to share incidents with the team.
