As a Cancer Data Clerk supporting the skin cancer and head & neck cancer pathways, I was responsible for the accurate collection, input, and validation of clinical data critical to the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of cancer patients. Working as part of a multidisciplinary cancer services team, I ensured timely and precise recording of patient information to support compliance with national cancer waiting time targets and improve clinical outcomes.
I work closely with MDT Coordinators, clinicians, and administrative teams to ensure the accurate capture of Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) outcomes and treatment plans. I tracked Urgent Suspected Cancer (USC) referrals and key pathway events to support compliance with NHS Cancer Waiting Time (CWT) targets (2WW, 31-day, and 62-day standards).I maintain a high level of patient confidentiality and adhered to all NHS data protection and governance standards.
I have developed detailed knowledge of skin and head & neck cancer diagnostic and treatment journeys, including staging systems (e.g., TNM), treatment modalities, and follow-up protocols. My problem solving and initiative is up to a high standard as I learned to identify data discrepancies, follow up with clinical teams, and take proactive steps to ensure data quality and timely reporting.
Although I began an apprenticeship as an MDT co-ordinator in March 2024, I did not complete the full programme due to being offered a permanent, full-time position as a cancer data clerk within the NHS. This opportunity allowed me to advance quickly into a key role within cancer services, gaining valuable hands-on experience in both the skin cancer and head & neck cancer pathways.
I remain committed to continued professional development and am actively seeking to complete further qualifications in healthcare administration, cancer services, or data management to strengthen my personal specification and enhance my long-term career progression within the NHS.
Within this role, I specialised in co-ordinating and supporting the Multi-disciplinary team (MDT) for skin cancer patients, ensuring smooth communication and efficient processes during patient assessment. Daily, I would handle and track urgent suspected cancer (USC) referrals, maintaining clear and accurate patient records to ensure timely follow-up and treatment. I have gained hands-on experience in clinical workflows, refining administrative and organisational skills while ensuring patient confidentiality and compliance with healthcare regulations. my time management skills have been by balancing multiple tasks including preparation, meeting attendance, and follow-up tracking while meeting tight deadlines.
I have enhanced my proficiency in healthcare IT systems (such as Infoflex, IHCS, EPIC & ICE), data entry, and document management. My written and verbal communication has been strengthened by liaising with various healthcare professionals.
Within my apprenticeship, I developed an understanding of how businesses are structured and how different departments (HR, finance, operations, etc.) collaborate to achieve business goals. I have gained skills in organising and maintaining office systems, including filing, record-keeping, and managing both physical and digital documents. My experience has developed within managing small projects, such as team meetings, from planning and organising tasks to ensure deadlines are met. I have also gained further insight into the understanding of the legal and regulatory environment in which businesses operate, including workplace safety, data protection (e.g., GDPR), and employee rights. I have developed my ability to work collaboratively with teams, gaining skills in conflict resolution, negotiation, and decision-making.
