At the age of 15, I started buying and selling products for a profit as a side hobby and by the age of 17 I launched my first business with a group of friends. By investing in products with great consumer interest and low costs, I discovered how to control my profit. This increased my awareness of the value of money in society and encouraged me to study this topic in greater depth and start a career in this Industry. I study English, Business and Economics and my problem-solving skills and ability to manipulate algebraic variables have since been enhanced, which is beneficial considering the numerical analysis involved in economics and business. My objective is to combine Economics, Business and Accounting to become a chartered accountant. Last year I also started working part time in Sainsburys along with my studies to grow personally, be a more independent and to learn more interpersonal skills. In retail, when it comes to selling, knowledge is power and the more you know about the product the more effective you will be as a seller. It gave me an opportunity to learn about the products and services the business offers and help me in building my confidence when dealing with different customer questions and how to stay calm during stressful situation which is an important life skill and shows me the real meaning of teamwork and how we all can contribute as a team to achieve the desired results.
In this role, I was focused on the important task of sorting and replenishing stock, as well as code checking across our produce, fresh foods and dry goods and unloading deliveries. Along with this, I had the task of dealing with day to day customer enquiries while delivery great customer service so they have a great shopping experience.
During my time, I covered the ethical standards all accountants have to adhere to, the UK tax system and accounting theory. It also taught me some life skills, such as how to calculate your income and the difference between gross and net pay. I was able to look at the day to day real time challenges that a business has to face and how much of an important role accountancy plays.
