NCS is a four‑phase programme designed to expose you to a variety of new experiences. Being present allows you to meet incredible people, have your voice heard, and have a great time. NCS brings together young people from various backgrounds for a common goal. It provides them with new skills and the tools they need to make a difference. It assists them in discovering the wide range of their abilities and the applicability of their potential.
I worked with six other people to complete my two DofE expeditions, which involved us talking through potential problems before they became issues, listening to all opinions, and taking leadership when necessary. I was in charge of map navigation, which was critical to our journey's success. Obtaining two levels of The Duke of Edinburgh's Award required unwavering resilience, especially when faced with challenges such as preparing for GSCEs and scheduling all relevant studies and exams. Keeping my eye on the prize and refusing to let problems distract me has been a character‑building experience that has boosted my confidence and, I believe, prepared me for the world of work.
My entire stay was spent laughing and pushing myself to meet my goals. Heavy bags had to be carried across fields as part of the process. It was crucial to be able to navigate and use a map and compass while camping. This also taught me how to pitch a tent, cook for myself in challenging conditions, and make the most of my time. I improved my communication skills by dealing directly with customers in a shop and interacting with other volunteers and staff during my DofE volunteering, which amounted to more than 130 hours. This included establishing long‑term and short‑term objectives, as well as overcoming obstacles.
